I enjoy hybrid instruments. Not sure why, I guess the concept appeals to me. So with that in mind, I got me a couple of new toys: First is a Gold Tone GM-6, which is a mandolin guitar. It's mandolin-sized, but it has 6 strings and is tuned like a guitar. Tons of fun. amzn.to/fkhcfkSecond is a Lanikai LU-8e tenor ukulele. 8 strings on that sucker, like a mandolin, but still tuned like a uke would be - G C E A. Tons of fun, too. And with nylon strings, a perfect instrument with which to play when your fingers are sore amzn.to/dZ59w4

Those do look and sound like they would be fun to play around with! I especially like the mandolin guitar. Does that tenor ukulele sound like a mandolin with those 8 strings, or does it still sound like a ukulele with a more robust tone? You gotta get us some clips of those two babies! Very nice instruments!

Thanks bud. The Uke sounds 100% like a uke, just "fuller". Definitely the sound I wanted.
The mando-guitar thing is fun. I need to get a transducer for it so that I can use it live. My hope is to be able to break up the monotony of a 3-hr acoustic set by doing a couple of songs with the uke, a couple with the mando guitar, a couple with the banjo, and the rest divided between my nylon string and steel string guitars.
I'm also looking for a partner in crime with whom to gig locally who plays these instruments - and also the upright bass would be awesome - so that we can do harmonies and swap instruments around. That should be tons of fun.

Cool stuff man..Love the mando especially.
Really love the idea of the acoustic band with a standup bass in there. I'd go to hear that. I mean it's a long drive and all and I'd need a little notice but yeah, that sounds like a great idea.

I hope I can find the right musicians for it, for sure!

Always pushing the edge! I love the idea of off center instruments, they can give a music set a whole lot different feel. Can hardly wait to hear them.

I know how this may sound lame but I've been watching American Idol this year. There was a guy on there the other night that did Georgia on my Mind while playing a standup bass. He killed it. Now you and that dude together would have it going on.

I don't know the dude in question, but I called my old bass player today. He plays both stand up and electric bass. he's too budy with work, but it was worth trying

I liked the look of a burns steer cutaway. looks a bit tele like maybe it comes from being a multi instrumentalist (joe satriani uses this term and I like it!) but I've always liked the idea of swapping instruments in a band situ. Never really found other band members keen on the idea though... If only I lived in maine huh? my mandolin is coming on nicely... I can't play lonely stranger yet, but just about can san francisco bay blues still playing more by sound tho

If you lived in Maine, I'd just have to have you over all the friggin' time to jam in my studio BTW, I got a baritone ukulele tonight... we'll see how much fun that is compared to the tenor! Oh, and Friday, I am jamming with a local guy who is interested in the concept of changing instruments. Should be fun... I'll keep you posted.

That's super cool. I've never even heard of those hybrid instruments. Do you play other hybrid instruments? It must be nice to say you play a dozen instruments.
