The night tends to be my muse. Don't know why, but I've always been a night owl for as long as I can remember. I always seem to catch the writing bug when the sun goes down, or when I'm trying to fall asleep, haha.

same on all counts. I think when you're tired the 'logical' bit of your brain takes a nap first so the creative side works for a while. sometimes like a little alcohol before writing seems to do the same trick. not drunk, but just say a glass of wine or a can or something.

Hmm, I like your theory, could explain why creative folks are insomniacs, lol. Well, I can be anyways, haha. Can say I've never tried to write after drinking, alcohol makes me tired. But when I use to smoke a certain green plant, that was inspiring, lmao.

On my deck, early evening time, one glass of scotch and a fine cigar with my favorite guitar. I start out with a spoken phase or a short chord run or even a chord variation with added fingering gets me going. Takes me 3 weeks to finish most of my songs. What sound good to me one night might not ring my bell the next night. Looking forward to hearing some of yours songs foxglove.

That sounds like an awesome way to write music. 3 weeks is a pretty decent amount of time. Well, I've never tried to write music before, lyrics yes, music no. Step 1 is to get a guitar and learn it. Step 2 is getting good at it. Step 3 is making music. I've got a long way to go. I doubt you'd want to hear any of the songs I've been writing as of late, they seem a bit emo at the moment, haha, but I like the lyrics. Although I wrote the most hilarious poem the other day, trying to figure out how I can turn it into a song, or if I even want to, don't know if it would wreck it.

I usually get a phrase, or a line. Then I try and build out a story from that line. Usually as I'm going I get an idea how I want that line to sound. THEN I pick up my guitar and start fitting some chords around it, by a bit of trial and error. I might just try playing the same guitar notes as what I'm 'singing' in my head, then gradually build up chords.

I also write better when I'm not wearing pants, hahaha, surprise. And I'm one of the few people that will admit I get inspiration when I'm sitting on the can. You have no idea how many great ideas for stories and things I've gotten when I was on the can. I definitely recommend that if you get writers block, you should go take a dump. It will open your mind, lol.

Foxglove , I have and idea. What do you think about posting something you have written and this bunch of misfits can put it to music for you. Might be fun to play around with.

Good question. My best answer is any time I have the time to sit with a guitar. It's even better when I'm involved in some collaborations and the creativity is elevated by the spirited input of the contributors. Typically, I write music for lyricists. That's a gas. Comping lyrics gifts me the mood, expression and context of a melody, meaning, the lyrics decide the melody in most instances. But, getting back to the question, when I write both lyrics and melody it's often charged by stopping everything, writing a poem about something and then comping from there. Melody comes easily to me. Lyrics are the servants of subjects/topics and after the latter hits me strongly enough the resulting song comes much easier.

Well, I have a poem that wrote, it's hilarious and obscene. I'm trying to work that into a song. Once I figure that out, I will totally post it. I would love to hear it with some music. Rofl.

Usually when I'm in a mood swing. I'm either very happy, angry or sad. That's when the emotion pours through.
