Just happen to have some bucks for a new guitar. I am looking for an accustic electric guitar. I have $2,000 availible. I have been looking at the Ovations. Martin, or Taylors. I like guitars with a good round bottom end but clear mids. I have always liked the sounds of the Ovations . So any of you guys have any experience with this brand. I am looking at the new countour back versions.

Mmmm $2000 is a nice budget to have - give me some I've always been very into the Ovation sound, bright and clear. The ones I've tried always seem to be well setup. I haven't seen the new ones, but if I had to pick a fault with them it was the rounded back conflicting with my rounded belly! If they've made the back nicer then this is a win. I don't know how available Maton guitars are over there (they're from Aussie), but they're a quality guitar and definitely worth a look.

Ovation now makes a new contour back that gets rid of some of the round back, That's the only reason I am considering, but no one around here has one to try.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCBTxTjNG_U&feature=relatedReview by a store in New Zealand (well south of me tho) of a maton guitar that should be in your budget quite happily unless there's some massive import taxes or something. I'll also give you a lesson in Australian but I suspect this court jester model is pretty expensive. He has other vids of more dreadnought style guitars www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV2PAH1rzP4Just heard some nice Cort acoustics too - good sound and probably easier to find

We bought my son an Ovation for his high school graduation. What a great playing guitar it is. The neck makes it feel much more like playing an electric. Plugged in it will rival my Taylor 710ce without question. It's nice that it has a on board tuner as well. I do however have two problems with Ovation. First (and this is only my opinion) is I don't think the unplugged sound is anywhere near as good as the plugged in sound. Second is, I have a round front and they have a round back so I end up playing them like a dobro or a lap steel when they roll up my belly. 2k is a pretty good budget for an acoustic. Looking on the used market (which is ripe with deals these days) you could get a lot of guitar for the money. Where it me I would tread that used market for a while before pulling the trigger. A good Martin, Taylor, Santa Cruz, Larivee ect would also hold its value better (IMO) and continue to sound better and better over time. And now you have my .02

I have three Ovations - and all three together total about $1K. For $2K, I wouldn't go Ovation. I'd get a used Crowdster if for live work, or if I just want an acoustic to sound good even when unplugged, I'd look at Larrivee, Taylor and Martin.

My crazy Yamaha is my light strumming and picking guitar because it has such rich mids. It falls a little short in the pounding hard rhythm that I some times use. A Martin is my favorite hard strumming guitar. My wife has a OOO composit Martin. And I stole my mother's 25 year old Sigma also made by Martin. The ovaltion I am looking at Custom Elite Adirondack. Cross between a classic and their standard Elite. The neck is a little wider. Hard to find, only 2 that I can find $1900. 250 made out of North America woods. The Martin's and Taylor's I am looking at are more than $2000. Going to pull the trigger in about 2 weeks for something. The local dealers have some new stuff from NAMM coming in, I would be delighted to spend less too if I can find the right guitar.

Spending less for a fun guitar that fits the bill is always a beautiful thing!

You hit that nail right on the head MoJo. My other concern with Ovation is that they are now owned by Fender and the main production is being moved to Korea for every thing but the Adamas models. Most none US guitars don't hold their value very good. If I spend $2,000 dollars you hope it will keep it's value. Still looking, the hunt is always fun.

That Crowdster idea is pretty darn good. I have one on my dream list. Phil, Please forgive me for living vicariously through your guitar shopping. I can't do any of my own right now and I'm really enjoying yours. ;D For what it's worth I love my Taylor. I've seen a few of them used on TGP at the 1500 dollar mark shipped in the factory hardshell case. And they have really good cases too. But whatever you get I'm sure it will be great I will feel some sense of satisfaction that at least one of us is having a new guitar day.

Ya, RK Taylors have always been one of my favorites. If I was able to have just one guitar between a Martin and a Taylor, it would be a Taylor. A friend of mine has a 714 which I lust after. I need a guitar that can be played without being plugged in too, so the crowdster is not what I am looking for right now.

I played some Ibanez acoustics last weekend - including the new one they have that is acoustic and electric. Wasn't particularly impressed with the unplugged sound but didn't really expect to be My Sonic (BARF!) acoustic which I bought basically because it was $169 and it had a fishman pup, actually doesn't sound half bad with a good set of strings. The intonation is pretty average tho. I'm not a 'headstock' kind of shopper so just keep your sound in mind when you're looking.
