You know how once in a while you have a moment in life that you know you'll never forget? Like your kids birth, your wedding day, the first chord you played that sounded like it was supposed to, first gig, things like that. My Dad is 70 years old now and played guitar for a living most of his life. A country player for the most part that grew up on Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. Anyway, he never wanted me to play because it cost him too many marriages and so forth, so he never really showed me much. I never understood his very unusual style. Very liquid and smooth with tons of passing chords and trem bar work. Much like a steel guitar in sound. Anyway last weekend we had Christmas at his house for that side of the family and I talked him into getting out his old Mosrite and playing a little. You could tell he was really rusty and struggled a bit with the digits not cooperating the way he's used to but anyone can tell he was once truly impressive. Well I asked and he agreed and I took my first real guitar lesson from my Dad. He showed my several passing chord progressions and some great alternate chord voicings. It was a very moving experience for me and I realized that I won't have him forever. My goal now is to spend more time with him and learn as much as I can and keep alive the music that's in him so I can pass it along to my son's.

man sounds awesome. Great if your Dad's got some unusual techniques too, try to nab them! I've been trying to experiment with different shapes working chords into solos, but it's hard to teach yourself what you don't know! My bro and I don't catch up as often as we should - he's the other real muso in the family. I tried a couple of times to drag him into our band to play bass, but he's 'retired' we should jam more

So finally your dad has worked out that it's not just a passing phase your going through and you are not going to grow out of it! Seriously though, I hope you and your dad get to have a lot of time together with your guitars.

RK, is that a young Jimmy Page whose shoulder you are resting your arm on? Seasons greetings from chilly Scotland :-) Ya never know Les... That Tele (JP started out with one as well) was a gift from his big brother for Christmas. It's a CV and plays unbelievably good. Blessings on you and yours during this wonderful season of the year. May the new year bring you all that you wish for......

Now, that is what I call a wonderfull Christmas picture. Great looking bunch. Oh and the people are OK too. We sing a little at Christmas and send a DVD out to the familys far away. My grand daughter of age 3 with her new Xylophone was really going at it during "We wish you a Merry Christmas." Sure could have used some other guitar players with me. Great post RK.
