I've seen in a few post, where it's been stated to stay away from starter combo packs, BUT Truly being on a limited budget, any good/decent words about those combo packs? Namely I was looking at the : Fender Affinity Special Strat and Frontman 15G Amp Value Pack Thanks for your time and input

Don't buy a starter pack unless you really have to
What is your budget and where are you?
You can do better then a starter pack

Welcome to the forum jmniev65!! I'm in agreement with HJ here. You can get more guitar for your hard earned $ today than ever before but crap is still crap and whats worse is that it can be very uninspiring to play. That would hinder your progress instead of help it. If this is a learning tool and mostly something you are doing for yourself you may consider buying one of those personal headphone amps. They usually come with clean/crunch/mega gain options, so you can hear what you want and they sound good enough to get you by until your savings can get back in order. They can be had for as little as 30 bucks. I rarely buy anything new anymore because there is so much good used equipment to be had around the states. You are getting pretty close to a MIM Tele or Strat on the used market. Like all Fender guitars you have to weed out the bad ones but there are some real players out there in the Mexican made genre. Craigslist is a good place to look as well as this and other guitar forums with classifed ads. TGP has tons of guitars on their forum. You might also consider a partscaster. There are alot of them for sale now at super cheap prices and some are excellent guitars with little resale value because of what they are. My #1 is a partscaster Tele that I just finished building. I couldn't sell it for more than 600 dollars probably but it replaced a 3k dollar guitar as my main. Good luck my friend and again Welcome.

Craigslist is a good place to look as well as this and other guitar forums with classifed ads. TGP has tons of guitars on their forum.... Welcome! This is great advice! I've only bought two guitars new, and they were good buys, but now I've become a follower of Craigslist. You can find great deals on there. I bought my two Epiphones through Craigslist, and they are great guitars. You can get a pretty good guitar on Craigslist in the $200 range. That would leave you some money for an amp. You should also look at the online sites for special offers. I bought my Ibanez Jet King new for $100 to $200 off of what it normally sold for by checking one of these online music store sites. The guitar was a closeout model that had been reduced from it's original price. On top of that, it was featured as a 'deal of the day' on the site, so it was reduced even more! BTW, Ibanez has a wide variety of very good, affordable instruments, so check them out. As for amps, the idea of a headphone amp is a good one. I bought a Vox AmPlug for $40.00! If you want a regular amp, Craigslist has those too. I recently saw a Roland MicroCube of $60.00 on there! Guitar forums are also a good place to shop. I just bought a Vox DA5 (similar to the MicroCube) for $75.00 through a guitar forum. You just have to look around. I know what it's like to be on a budget, but I still enjoy my hobby by looking around and finding good deals. Good luck to you!

Well there is good news and bad news. The good news you are shopping for a guitar and amp!!!!!!!!! Bad news it's just the start. I am going to suggest a different direction, remember this is coming from a Fender guy. I really like the mid range Ibanez guitars, 2nd hand they can be a real bargain. All of the amps mention are pretty good. I have a Roland Cube and they are fun because of the different amps and effects. Good luck in your search. Phil

Some good advice there
RK is right about poor gear being uninspiring and if it is difficult to play or sounds bad then you won't want to play it.
You are on the right track with your amp but have more of a think about your guitar - I am in the UK so prices for secondhand kit in the USA is an unknown to me but MIM strats or teles are a good bet if the price is right
Headphone amps are an option Vox Amplugs are pretty good I have one myself but I wouldn't want to play all the time through headphones

WOW, thank you all for the replies. some things to think about Think I'll save abit more and keep my eyes open on the used side too. But being kinda new to the electric side of things, kinda gun shy about buying used. Guess if I find something I could always take a pic and post for you guys to see , anyways again thanks for all the ideas' Hmmm just found this : Yamaha RGXA2 and a Line 6 Spider III 15-Watt Amplifier for $400(usd) firm watch think? ?
