I just think jeff beck is a better guitar player than clapton. just more fluid and moves around the neck easier and plays many more styles.Beck is always happy with a guitar strapped around his neck. Clapton just seems to want to play the blues like Hendrix which will never happen, only one Hendrix. Guess that's why clapton never seems truly happy with his guitar playing.Just my opinion which i know doesn't add up to much in the guitar world.

Well I can't comment as to the satisfaction of EC with his own playing. I can say that he is one of the most fluid blues players I've ever heard. I don't go out of my way to listen to him but don't avoid the opportunity either. If I had to say what the emotional content of his playing is compared to say SRV or Freddie King I would give EC a V for vanilla. It's obviously great but doesn't totally move me consistently. Jeff Beck however is IMHO one of the most important guitarist's in history. I saw him when I was in high school on a whim because I'd heard he was pretty good. OMG, what a throw down of a concert. His phrasing, touch, flow is so unique. Jeff is one of the few that can play three notes in any context and you know it's him. JB will probably never be as popular as EC as the later has been writing radio playable music since the 60s, but as far as someone who has a control and mastery of the instrument JB is da man. Get a copy of the DVD "Live at Ronnie Scott's" and sit at the feet of the master. You don't have to like the style of music to appreciate the skill of the player. And this brother got skills.

I have seen both of these amazing players over the years, Clapton about 3 years ago. Tough to compare the two styles and players. Beck probably has more diversity and inventive style than EC. If I am at a concert who do I want to listen too for a couple hours, Clapton. If you watch him on stage he is always comfortable up there, but you never get the impression that he has to be the star every moment. Beck on the other hand is always leading the way in the spot light. When I saw Clapton last had a young hot guitar player (forgot his name) (played a right handed guitar upside down. But when this guy was smoking his guitar parts Clapton was in a totally supportive mode. When he took over, everyone in the place knew it.. I could listen to his old Cream and Derrick and the Dominoes songs all evening. But his roots are in the Blues and that is his passion. I personally am not a Beck music fan, but I do agree he plays like no one else and is one of the all time greats. He will never have the overall recognition that Clapton has because he doesn't have Layla, Wonderful to night, Cross Roads, and ect., that were all huge commercial hits. Satriani also has that inventive feel to me that Beck has . He does things with the guitar that no one else does but again I am not a fan of his music. I admit I am still stuck in the late 60's.

Hey Phil, I'm stuck in a time warp too! But I like what I like, and I prefer Clapton also. I have never gotten into Jeff Beck music. To me, if I like what I hear, I don't really care about how technically superb the guitarist is. As long as I get pleasure from listening to the overall musical piece, that's what does it for me. I love the Blues, and Clapton makes my ears happy, so Clapton gets my vote.

I didn't really mean for this to be a contest between the two. I understand that outside of actual guitar players that not too many people have even heard of Jeff Beck, while most have heard and like Clapton. I agree that claptons music is more popular and easier to listen to, but i just think becks playing has that something extra that as a guitar player just does it for me. I just can't watch "live at ronnie scotts"and not get goose bumps no matter how many times I've seen it.

Absolutely agree that which ever of the two flips your switch, you are listening to greatness. And there is no right or wrong opinion. And although I am squarely a Beck boy, on the "Live at RS's" DVD during the blues section at the end where Clapton sits in, I like his solos better than JB's because they "fit" better. But just his trem bar techniques alone are worth 10 times the amount of the video. To say they are astounding would be an understatement. Complete control of his chosen weapon. Do you guys ever listen to Steve Morse, Eric Johnson or Brent Mason? They are also great players and worth an ear if you get the chance.
