Pete Townshend Jimmy Page. A tie for me. When I was just a weee lad. Ah, a late victim of the British Invasion. I always had respect for Mr. Page but oddly enough I didn't "get" Townsend for many years. Now I'm convinced he's sort of a genius.

I listened to Dire Straits for many years before I even picked up the guitar so I guess that would mean Mark Knopfler was first - but the first artist to actually make me want to play large chunks of their stuff has to be Eric Clapton. People tend to scoff and say he's not really a blues artist, but he lead me to a wonderful number of earlier blues artists, without him I'd never even know who they were.
The artist with the most impact on me has to be Albert Collins - the first time I heard him within a few bars I said "That's how I want to play the blues". SRV I seriously didn't get until much later on - too loud at the time. Rory I didn't even know about until a year ago.
I should just have said "It's complicated!"

Good to see Albert Collins on the list. I don't think he gets as much credit as he deserves for how he changed people's idea of guitar tone used in the blues. I first heard him back in 78 or so jamming with Neal Schon of Journey. I hadn't heard a Tele sound like that before. Instant fan.

I even tried an Em tuning for a while, I know he played Fm, but I wanted to keep the frets the same. Was interesting how it changed my phrasing - made some things really easy, and others real hard. I was always impressed the sounds he could get out of it yet was capo'd so high.

No way do I do minor tunings or any alternate tuning for that matter. I write out about half my solos but the others are improvised and the thought of reaching for something I hear in my head and it being a half step flat makes me nauseous. ;D

lol yeah I don't use it anymore. We do a few SRV songs, but I either tune them up a half step, or just play them in his key without retuning. So some G#'s etc Working with a harp player means some scales don't go so we have to move them or no harp. I think I've settled on open G for my slide - gives a nice full drone sound. But yeah I don't do funny things like drop D etc. All my solo's are improv so far

Cool, I love harmonica. Second favorite instrument just behind guitar and just ahead of tenor sax. I love slide playing too. I haven't done much of it at all but I think it's an art form within an art form that doesn't get the attention it deserves. Kudos to you for doing it. There is a guy that lives a little north of me that is gathering a lot of attention for his use of two slides at the same time. He uses one on his pinky and the other on I believe his Johnny Cash. Or maybe it's one on his fore finger and the other on his ring finger. Regardless, he wails. He won the Guitar Center "king of the blues" contest last year. Can't remember his name though.

We're doing a couple of watermelon slim songs, little red rooster, and walking blues in slide. Yeah I was wondering a while back who beat Bonamassa in 09 so I know who you mean. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGmLsLmT11AHonestly the 2nd slide makes the odd note sound bad to my ears. Don't get me wrong - I find slide difficult as is and couldn't even approach 2 slides. but the second part he plays better with just one slide. seems more like a gimmick to me if it makes the sound worse - maybe I'm just jealous lol
