Hi all I have finally took the plunge and started on a dream of mine that I have had since I was a teen hehe almost 40 now, but I guess better late than never, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips, I have got a few chords down but having a hard time with going from chord to chord and my struming is just awful, any advice would be great I am in exactly the same situation as you (I played as a child but didn't bother to pick up the instrument again until I was 40) and am having exactly the same struggles as you - I can form quite a few chords but my transitions are terrible, simply terrible. I couldn't agree more.

I haven't been playing long (just a couple of months and wasn't devoting a whole lot of time to it during that period - although that has changed with the purchase of my new SG!) so I am trying to learn some simple songs right now (any suggestions would be hugely appreciated).
Last night I started working on Photograph by Def Leppard. I am also playing around a tiny bit with Smoke on the Water but I've put that aside in favour of Photograph.

Welcome! You can get so many different good guitars for $400. Depending on the type of music you play, you could look at the Epiphone line or the Squier Classic Vibe line. The necks on the Classic Vibe series feel great! They sell for $400 up here in Canada but the exact same SG as mine (for the original poster - it is an Epiphone G-400 SG which is a remake of the classic '62 SG but they also make an almost identical one which is a remake of the classic '66 SG) sells for $349 in the US (Musician's Friend, Guitar Center, etc.). I highly recommend the SG (as you will quickly learn if you read the thread that Gasman linked to ) and would be more than happy to answer any questions you have about it.

Colchar, she's a BEAUTY, that's for sure! Congratulations! Thanks! Making this trade was a great decision as I absolutely love her. I love the rich cherry colour and the finish simply couldn't be better - the amp that is reflected on the guitar in one of the pictures actually sits about six feet away and you can see it clear as day. The tone seems way better than the tone on the Ibanez. That being said, I haven't played around with the tone too much yet so my answer is preliminary at the moment. The sustain on this thing is far better than the sustain on the Ibanez was - notes seem to ring forever in comparison. As for playability - there is simply no comparison between the two as the SG easily wins in that category. She feels great in my hands and, although the Ibanez had a great neck on her, the neck on this SG is so much better. It is also smaller which makes it both easier and more comfortable to play. I found that I would get frustrated with the Ibanez but I simply can't get enough of the SG as she is such a joy to play.

The quality of the photos isn't great because I had to decrease the size of the files in order to post them but, regardless, here they are. Attachments:

I pick it up either this evening or at some point tomorrow. I'll take a couple of pictures once I get it and will post them later this week. Looking forward to it! I got her tonight and she's gorgeous!! I'll post some photos later on this week providing, of course, that I can keep my hands off her long enough to take the pictures.

Welcome Colchar, and congrats on a fine trade up. Maybe we could work out some kind of deal where you handle my trades. I don't do so well historically. I have been known to be quite the S.O.B. when buying cars as I always get good deals from the dealership so I just applied some of those skills to this deal. I don't know enough about guitars yet to be really good at it but, for a first trade, I'll definitely take it. Actually. I am still surprised that I got them to give me back the full purchase price of my Ibanez. I was thinking after I finalized the trade that I might have been able to talk them down to $175 cash but, at the time, I didn't want to push it.

Hi everyone.
I'm new to the forum but thought I would mention a trade/deal I made Thursday night that I think is a great one.
I started playing guitar again a few months ago after years away from the instrument. I wanted an Epiphone Les Paul or SG but ended up buying an entry level Ibanez primarily because I got a good deal on it. Well I’ve now managed to trade that and some cash in for a new Epiphone SG G-400 in what I think is a great deal.
I bought my Ibanez new four months ago for $200. Epiphone G-400s sell for $400 here. I was in the store where I bought my Ibanez yesterday (different location, same chain) and I worked out a deal with them. I can have a brand new G-400 for my four month old Ibanez and $200 cash. They aren't charging me any tax on the SG and are throwing in a free set-up, a free set of strings, and a free gig bag (or a hard case if the sales guy can find one that nobody is going to miss).
So basically they're giving me the full cost of my Ibanez back even though it is four months old and they're also cutting me a deal on the SG.
To me it was a no-brainer so I gave them the $200, told them to get the set-up done, and arranged to take the Ibanez in on Monday to complete the swap.
I can hardly freakin' wait to get my hands on that SG – it is the classic rich cherry version, feels like a million bucks in my hands, and rings like a bell. It is going to sound great played through my Marshall.
Monday can’t get here quickly enough!
