As someone who went from absolutely not being able to sing and play, to someone who can kind of do it but not as well as I'd like I give these tips. I'm just kind of getting this right myself so your mileage may vary 1) Like everything in music, it's about practising it. Whenever I'm learning a new song now, I sing and play, or maybe just talk and play I don't just do one or the other, even if I'm not really concentrating on the words or getting it exactly right. I never thought I'd be able to play Romeo and Juliet on its own, let alone sing and play it. But cos I learned the song while singing it, I did pretty well almost straight away. Plus I already knew the lyrics of this song from listening to it for most of my life which brings me to #2 2) It's hard to do 2 things at once, let alone 3 or 4. If you're trying to read the lyrics and/or chords of a song while singing and playing, you'll get really messed up. You have to know the chords and lyrics by listening to the original before you can sing and play well. It's ok to have the lyrics/chords it there for reference, but relying on it while you're playing doesn't work all that well. We tried to do Baby Please Don't Go which I didn't know all that well and I was trying to read, sing and play. It was a total failure. 3) Try just a long strum on the 1 beat of a chord, let the sustain take the chord through, then sing in the meantime. Or like I see a lot of guitarists (even SRV, Rory, Joe Bonamassa many more) do, they just strum all left hand muted notes and don't start actually playing again until they finish singing. Or sometimes do nothing at all. I did Rock Me Baby this way. If you've got some bass in behind you it fills the hole. I still sing better without playing cos I can really concentrate on my voice, tone, vibrato etc hopefully I'll be able to get there one day I'll stick a link to my channel at the bottom too heh www.youtube.com/user/thedoctr44#p/u

To answer your question - NO! BUT...I really have never tried both at the same time! BUT...Based on my playing alone AND my horrible voice when singing alone...I still say...NO! ;D
Maybe now that my son starts school again, on the days I am not called to sub and am alone in the house, I might try doing both at once. I might surprise myself...Doubt it, though!

I try to sing and play at the same time. In my experience singing is more difficult. Both acts require practice. No rotten fruit has been thrown in a few years the last few times I have played. If you want to make your singing and playing better, record yourself and listen and study the play back and do it over and over again. Then destroy the recordings so they don't come back to haunt you.

I've tried this and thought to try to sell my recordings to some nature reserve, to play as examples of bullfrog and swamp noises :>

As stated it's just a matter of practice. It'll come...just stick with it.
When I was in high school I went to a Rush concert and watched Geddy Lee sing, play Taurus pedals and play ridiculous bass lines at the same time. Blew my mind. Like he had three brains working at the same time. I read an interview with him later where he talked about how he came to be able to do it and his answer was practice. It was the interview that inspired me to keep trying until I could do it.
So the answer to your question is yes, I can sing and play at the same time. Just not sure you'd want to hear it. ;D
