...but don't. What's stopping you? I don't mean this in a flippant, accusatory way, as much as I would be interested in hearing what candid answers you can provide. So if you are so inclined, please share with us the obstacle(s) you identify between your current situation and playing live. Maybe the rest of us can help find a solution!

Umm warning <rant> Our band still being in the rehearsal studio? lol Some member changes haven't helped. I've been at this along with the singer for about 1.5 years now. Our demo disc just got nerfed by a HDD crash at the studio, hopefully it can be recovered. We've been concentrating on those songs and we need to tidy up the others to get them back to a reasonable level. Probably about 10 or so out of our 45-50 to brush up. Honestly I did say to myself if we were still rehearsing in June I'd give it away and it looks like we will be at this rate. The singer is the band leader and I just don't think he has the drive to get us out of the garage so to speak. He's recently started dropping songs he finds difficult to sing too, and those tend to be the ones that aren't 12 bar blues. Meaning it's the songs that give us some variation in the set list. So yeah things are getting a bit frustrating. That said we are very close to being ready and I feel like a shit giving it away at this point so I don't know. If it comes down to it I think I'm honestly happier doing my own thing, and if my singing + playing ability keeps improving I might actually be able to get away with it But there's something about playing with a band that you don't get on your own too. So it's not an easy decision. </rant> Anyway Mojo if I ever manage to get States-side again, I'm hitting up Maine borrowing a guitar off ya and we can do a duet right? Ha

My friend who has been in several groups from Bar Bands to performance bands for over 40 years has told me several times that making groups more versatile is very hard when every one is not on the same page. The trouble is that vocals usually determines what is possible with in any group. Thats why "Tiny Tim" didn't sing any Who songs. Don't get me started on drummers and bass players. Lucky us guitar types are pure of heart and of sound mind and visionaries in the word of music. ;D

Seriously though I'm with Mojo on the importance of live performance. Not sharing your music leaves a void in the experience of playing. Of course this is just my opinion but I happen to be TOTALLY right about this. ;D ;D ;D Even if it just starts out playing in the living room for your girlfriend it is fulfills the purpose of the medium. Music was created to be shared.

My intent was never to play live. It was only to learn and play for my own enjoyment, as a way to relax. As it is now, I'm beginnig to think playing guitar was just a passing phase for me. I am not taking it as seriously as I should and not playing that much. I am not throwing in the towel and getting rid of any of my instruments, as there is always hope and 'tomorrow'. As for the 'girlfriend' as an audience, that won't work either for me - don't have one!

It is always good to know you can pick your guitar up whenever the mood takes you. I know if I took my guitar playing "seriously" I would be a deeply disappointed man. But I do feel good when something I'm trying to play starts to come together. It is just as well I can take pleasure in the little things in life as my guitar playing does not come together that often.

Ok I was pretty meh about my guitar work, just playing whenever I felt like, not really taking it seriously. I could play ok, but nothing to write home about. But playing in a band, and actually getting together with people to jam improves your playing a hundred fold. You get more into, it's really a bit lift. Yeah it has its frustrations, but sometimes you come together and nail something that you know by yourself you couldn't achieve. Our previous bass player for example would play a certain riff and totally on the fly during a song I played a riff I know my 'autopilot' doesn't go. There is a something to being in a band you don't get otherwise. So give it a whack in a no pressure environment if you can. Just jam with some folks My bucket list actually has a jam with the 3chordguitar forum on it

Couldn't agree more Rob, best thing I every did was get together with other players. I've been lucky to play with people of varying skills who are in it for the fun, not the ego. My brother in law has been a pro blues harp player for 40 years and I have learned more music trading 4's with him than I could in a year of formal lessons.

"Glad to hear you are not throwing in the towel Gman. It is always good to know you can pick your guitar up whenever the mood takes you." Thanks, Les! I've just been too busy lately and guitar has dropped on the priority list. ...My brother in law has been a pro blues harp player for 40 years and I have learned more music trading 4's with him than I could in a year of formal lessons. Now that I've been working as a substitute teacher, I met a teacher that just happens to live in my old home town. I had never met him before, as he moved to my old village just two years before I left. Anyway, we got to talking and I found out he is a pro blues harp player as well. He is somewhat older than me, and he was saying that at one time, he played with Lightnin' Hopkins! We just talked briefly, but I'd like to hear more! School's about to end, so I probably won't talk to him until August again, but I wouldn't mind hearing him play, and maybe (if he lets me), play along with him (There aren't many Blues players around here, so maybe he'll welcome someone who is into the Blues to accompany him!).
