Which amp ? $$$$$$$$$$ The amp is only half the the answer. Some guitars sound sound the best with certain amps. I really like Fenders and semi hollow bodies through tube amps. There are some really great little tube amps out there that many people really love but they all have their own sound. The great thing about the tubes is that they can be modified too. Good hunting.

I had a line 6 spider IV HD 150 for about 4 months. I got a couple of good sounds out of it, but it wasn't 'full bodied' enough for a 3 piece (and I had it through a 4x12) unless you were some god of a player (which I'm not I need all the tone fattening help I can get!!). If you were in a 4 piece you'd probably be fine. I've heard good things about the spider valve series but honestly I've been put off line 6 pretty bad by this experience. Don't know what your requirements are, but a small tube amp is probably the way you want to go. There are some good sounding solid state amps around too that have been recorded on the forum (Vox DA's / Pathfinders, Fender's new mustangs aren't bad, Roland does some to I forget the models, epiphone valve juniors) that have a good sound to them without the weight of tube amps (read: tube amps are bloody heavy). But I've never met a tube amp that didn't do the business. I've met several solid state ones that don't. Best once again to go to the store and play - be sure and take your guitar too The only problem you tend to have with tubes is they sound their best when pushed - which means they're loud and often not bedroom material - there's some brilliant little 5 watt ones out for this tho now Don't make this mistake either, find a nice small amp. 50w is high enough for anything you'd ever need, and probably even overkill. don't look for a million watts.

The world is your oyster with small low wattage tube amps.
I have recently gone through a few amps solid state and modelling. I had a Pathfinder and a Vox VT20 Plus but after a few weeks I just didn't want to play them. In fact the Vox has put me off modelling amps forever. I could not get the sound I wanted.
I ended up with a Laney Cub 10 and I am very pleased with it. Very basic, very small, very very loud. You will need a pedal to get good overdrive though at low volumes. Good clasic rock tones and I prefer it to the Vox AC4T (sorry Les!) but each to their own
Not played the Mustang but not heard any bad reports, Fender Superchamp XD / Vibrochamp are a couple of my favourite amps.
As pwfirst says what do you want? and how much do you want to spend?
I must admit I prefer tube amps for their overall sound and feel. The only problem is they have to be cranked to get the best out of them so unless you have very understanding or deaf neighbours and even for bedroom practice 5 watts is really loud.
Some amps will allow you to set a 1 watt output to get nice cranked valve sounds at low volumes (Vox AC4T, Laney Cub 12 to name two).
The newish VHT Special 6 are getting good reviews - not tried one
Blackstar do a 1 watt valve amp
The Laney Cub series would be my first port of call.

Nice HJ - yeah I keep forgetting the Fender Superchamp XD. It's a fantastic little amp and I really wanted one - but unavailable here (thanks Fender grr, Australian models would work here!) or it would have been my small amp of choice I think. Part tube and part modelling and sounds very nice.

There is a non modelling channel also which is good

You need to listen to a few and decide which is for you because we all will have different opinions. The Laney Cub is all valve (tube). The amp is very basic Volume, gain, tone and a hi / lo input. Despite this I can't get a bad sound out of it. The Vox VT20+ had 3 million knobs but it always sounded shit - bit like a Line 6 - sometimes more is less If you like the Blackface sound then the Fender Superchamp maybe a better place to start - the straight channel one is supposedly a clean "blackface" model. The Superchamp is a hybrid part valve part SS but the modelling isn't invasive like the Vox modelling - I can't really explain what I mean but the Superchamp is a cracking amp and has the advantage if some OK effects (although you will get bored of them and want pedals anyway!)

Speaking of Silverfaces I've seen some Fender Champs around on Ebay. I've never experienced one first hand, but they sound beautiful on Youtube. Too heavy to ship to me here for less than a small fortune and would need rewiring to 240V but I still strongly considered one. Bit off topic HJ, but I'm looking for another compressor... The Line 6 was clipping and started sounding very artificial. Munches up batteries too. Probably going to get an MXR Dyna Comp - right price etc In slightly more interesting news tho, I'm gonna bite the bullet and get a Memory Boy while I'm at it.

Ok HJ can you please remove your damn spy cameras from my home and work!! You spoil all my surprises Installs some toneriders at the same time I do... suggests one of my favourite amps... bah! What I'm really saying is you and I obviously need a jam sometime My cart from Amazon currently contains: Behringer US600 - seems to track better than the Boss super shifter from what I've heard, and is a paltry 50 bucks so worth a go. For a pitch shifting pedal this is seriously no money at all. POGs are still the best octaver I've heard, but are still in the OMG too expensive for what I'd probably use it for pile too. Behringer DC9 Compressor - Looks like a clone of the MXR Dyna comp, and app sounds a little better. $20 is chicken feed. MINE! And of course the Memory Boy. Have wanted one of these for a while. On this pedal alone I'm saving $100 ordering from Amazon than what I'd pay here.

I have owned 4 amps in my guitar life, a Marshall, Blackstar, Vox and soon to be delivered superchamp (Sick of listening to Andy tell me how great a amp it is, and if its good enough for johnny marr, it will do for me)
And I would always suggest the superchamp or the blackstar but if your wanting a amp that has effects build in then the vox is pretty good for the price.
