Hey guys, I just recently was given a guitar for my birthday and it seems i can't get enough of it. I had searched for easy country songs to learn and came across mojo's Easy Come Easy Go video on youtube.com. I can play the chords without difficulty but the strumming I get confused on where the up ticks come in. If anyone has any info that might help me i would really appreciate it. Thanks, Jt
Hi JT and welcome. when my wife was first learning she had the same problem. She liked to strum along with the vocal, WRONG. There are many many strum patterns but you need to concentrate on keeping it simple for now. Most songs are written in 4/4 or 3/4 time. 4/4 Strum down with every beat, just like taping your foot to the rhythm //// 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 and keep going, after you have this done, start changing it around to : down / up / down / up or down / down /up / down Just keep it consistent for now Many country songs are in 3/4 time 1 2 3 1 2 3 and on and on. On 3/4 songs I often strum down on the first beat hitting the first (large) string only, then strum down 2 times hitting the smaller strings. This is your starting point and most songs will fit into one of these two patterns, good luck. Mojo has some great strumming instructions for 3 chord songs that you should look at too.

Jt, I envy you. I've the exact opposite issue I struggle with. I've no trouble with strumming, I can pick up the patterns and keep tempo almost without thinking of it...but I all but have to stop and lift each finger seperately changing to different chords. PW hit it square though, pick one pattern, and just stick with it. Toss in a change, minor change after a while.
