Most of you know by now I like to tinker a little, keeps me out of the bars. After buying my mandolin, which is starting to sound like a mandolin, a little. I decided that it might be fun to build one. after a little research, I ordered the Bluegrass mandolin manual by Siminoff. No he doesn't make Vodka too. The plans are of the Loar model made by gibson. The book is extremely detailed and after a few purchases I just started. You might notice that There are three necks. Since I had to construct a bunch of jigs and such that making more than one really wasn't that much more work, I'll see. The neck, sides, and back will be made with curly maple. the tops will be three different type of spruce so I can hear the difference. Or after screwing up I'll end up with one playable instrument. This is the start a making guitars and mandlins when I retire. The necks were rough cut with the band saw and shaped with wood rasps and files, easier than I thought it would be. One important note, wear gloves when you work with rasps. I have a few holes in my finger tips. The next step it to make the peg head with all of it curly Q's. the head is made with three pieces to give it strength. Wish me luck I will post the pictures as I go on.
