well firstly, neither I, nor the earthquake was in Oz (Australia) but I'd just gone on holiday in Christchurch, New Zealand. Earthquake happened 5 mins before we landed at the airport, which is fortunately not in the central city. Was stuck in a hotel conference room for 7 hours with lots of other people getting pretty regular aftershocks. Fortunately, we managed to get out of there and stay with friends of the family. Today we've managed to get out of the city, and are in Timaru further south, so should be able to continue our holiday. Crap way to start a holiday, but our problems obviously totally insignificant compared to others they had another big one 6 months ago and were just starting to recover from that so this is a real gut wrencher for the people living in Christchurch.

Man, thanks for answering. I was worried about you. Sorry for the Oz thing, I guess I was really worried that I fumbled my geography so badly Enjoy the rest of the holidays. Crazy when mother nature chooses to remind us that we're insignificant, she does it in grand fashion. Scary stuff.

yup mother nature always wins. No new people found since wednesday I understand which is a big shame. the september earthquake happened at 4am so everybody was at home and safe - no fatalities at all. this time it was at 1pm so everybody was at work or walking around the city. we would have been in the city ourselves if the quake had happened even an hour later so we were pretty lucky to get away.
holiday is almost back on track. maybe some fishing monday / tuesday

Yeah international flights generally end up in Auckland - Where I live and our largest city. Flying back in 2 days. I have some friends in Christchurch, but they're all ok. The central city area that was badly hit is probably going to be shifted due to all the damage to the ground in that area. Big repair bill there. Although we are an island (infact a group of islands) we are the size of the UK, and not a small island like say Hawaii. So it's safe to travel in the rest of the country. Christchurch is a good size city tho, and was full of historic buildings - very english in style. it's a big loss.

World cup will still be held obviously - too big a rugby country to not! It hasn't been decided what's happening yet with the games that are/were scheduled to be in Christchurch. The stadium I just heard tonight has some visible damage, but the engineers haven't finished checking so there's no official word. I imagine the affected games might be moved to Dunedin (where I am at the moment incidentally) instead which is a few hours drive south. Little bit of rescheduling of games, but I don't think it'll cause any major problems, we have many stadiums.
