Has anyone done karaoke at a bar or a karaoke joint? Do you feel it's improved your singing, stage presence, or ability to get over stage fright?
I've done it quite a few times, but 2 nights ago was the first time I've done it in front of a crowd. It was different, but I had a really good time, and I got into it.

I refuse to do karaoke. Karaoke killed live music and took away perfectly fine venues from local musicians. It's not like I hate it with a passion, but - I hate it with a passion.

Band in a box isn't much better. When a bar can pay 1 or 2 guys $300 bucks for a night it sounds like win-win. Better money for bar, more money for players involved. But most punters found it was crap, and a lot of bars here have since removed live music entirely - in favour of being a sports bar or dj'd nightclub.
Now I know several 4 pieces having to do gigs for $300, barely covers costs for 4 guys. I know you don't do it for the money, but damn.... It's basically the same money bands were working for 30 years ago.

I can't sing very well, so I've only done karaoke once. It was many years ago for my birthday. A couple of my female co-workers took me out to celebrate. We went to this place where they were doing karaoke. I sang one song - while the girls went to the bathroom - pretty brave, huh?

Boring story alert. This is quite a long story and may not be worth reading but..... I cannot sing in tune, no matter how much alcohol I drink I never sound in tune even to me. Now I used to live in a West Highland village that will remain nameless to protect the innocent. I was a retained fireman as well as having my day job. One of the Leading Firemen was owner of the small supermarket and a Restaurant in the village . Still with me? When I was transferred away by my day job employer my Firemen friends had a leaving do for me which naturally involved copious amounts of beer. We ended the proceedings in the Leading Fireman's closed for the night restaurant, frying and eating chips (French fries) and continuing to imbibe. Now my friend the restaurant owner, had recently purchased a Karaoke machine which he duly switched on. Before I knew it I was belting out Be Bop A Lula like a professional. Unbeknownst to me the Buggers had recorded me singing and the next day the tape was on loop and being played over the in house pa system for the restaurant and the supermarket. All day people were coming in to the office where I worked and giggling and laughing at me. So no I don't do Karaoke. Ever!

I am with MoJo on this one. My two pet peeves are Karaoke and DJ's as a form of entertainment. No soal in either activity.

Ment to say, Anyone have access to this tape over there? ;D ;D Fortunately not. I think they are still using it to scare little children away from the fire.

I can't say that I hate it, cause it's really quite fun. From a business perspective it makes perfect sense. As a musician, I would hope you would become business minded and learn that everything changes and thus you need to learn a new skill (become a live karaoke band???), or just do it for fun, which is what COVER music is all about anyways.

1. I did a live karaoke thing when I hosted an open mic. Mixed results due to mixed drinks 2. Cover music is NO just for fun. It can also be a way to make money. Not great money, but good money nonetheless.

I haven't done cover stuff in a long time. I think it would be hard for me to return to it. Doing original stuff is where you find out who you are IMO. Of course as the Moj mentioned, you can make money doing cover material. Back in the 80's you couldn't get the time of day in a bar with originals. Thank goodness times have changed and people (some) are willing to lend an ear to something new and fresh.
And unless I start drinking again (and I won't cause I'm too good at it) I probably won't do karaoke again.....although I did do a pretty good "I'm a Steamroller" last time I tried. ;D
