I've mentioned a few times here that I didn't get into Blues until I was an adult. For that matter, I didn't even listen to Rock that much when I was growing up. I listened to Country, some 50's Rock n Roll, and I listened to this guy and others like him: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_HurricaneAl Hurricane is a legend in my state. He was born and grew up close to where I was raised and now live. The guy has played with some of the greats in Rock n Roll, and he's still going. In the spirit of introducing different music to this forum, I found a pretty good sample of his work. It's in Spanish, but it's a ballad to a lost love about their breakup.

Dude, as crazy as this is, my girlfriend is Mexican and so, yes she listens to some Spanish music. I swear the other day, we were driving and she was listening to Selena, and I was like "I'm going to download some Mariachi music when I get home". Yeah... I think I've come a LONG way musically from a few years ago.

Selena had some good stuff. She had a great voice! I'll still listen to Mariachi sometimes. I like some of the old (1940-50?) singers. Some of those guys had some awesome falsettos!

For me, when I was driving I just realized I don't like it because I don't understand it. I've known that for years about jazz, but why it just hit me about Mariachi I don't know. Anyways.. I've decided to try and understand it as best as I can.

To me, Mariachi music is a form of orchestra music. Of course, small Mariachi groups can't sound like an orchestra, but the big ones are a different story:
But then use the same ensemble to play regional folk music, and you get what is normally thought of as 'Mariachi music':

I just couldn't resist: An actual 'orchestra' with this same 'Mariachi'! Check out the amazing falsettos of the singer!

Ok, so it's Nevada and not New Mexico but close enough imho. Hahaha! Man, I used to love to watch Bonanza when I was a kid (still do on DVD sometimes)! Yeah, I can hear the similarity in the music! That song I posted (glad you liked it, BTW) is about a shepherd and his flock, so it has a ranching theme - fits right in with Bonanza! As for NV and NM, it's very similar terrain, so yeah, close enough! In fact, there is a huge place about 40 miles from me up in the mountains that looks just like the background in the Bonanza opening theme song.
