Right chaps, a friend of mine who has never played guitar of any kind before has been persuaded to take up the bass. So I would appreciate some pointers on inexpensive but reasonably sounding bass guitars (probably, but not restricted to, shortscales) Also any amp recommendations? Not looking at live performances but the amp has to compete with two guitarists, one using a line six spider 30 watt and me with my Vox AC4tvh with all of its 4 watts.
Thanking you.

Lot of good basses out there. Fender is the top dog but a little pricey. My old bass is an Ibaneze. They make a really good bass with very nice necks. Cort makes a nice entry level bass too. 4 string bass is the way to start too. Amps, the bigger is better. They seem to be set up in 3 versions #4 10 in speaker, 12 in, or 15 in speakers. I personally like the 15 in, sounds more round to me. I have a Peavey 15 in bass amp that is respectable they make a 12 in unit that I almost bought. And a cool looking sunglass. Watch out for bass players, they are often just a little off center, unlike the chosen few," guitar players. "

My half-brother has a 70s gibson firebird bass that he loves, but obviously that's not on the agenda! He did venture into the 5 string world for a bit tho and bought a Samick 5 string bass, the right price and sounded ok. Otherwise I'd agree with Phil that Cort is a good choice. Since that Peavey with a piezo bridge guitar I was looking at has gone away, I've started looking at an Italia Mondial. Weird looking thing. But Italia do cheap basses too - no idea on the sound front, I haven't gotten to that stage of investigating them Entry level amp? I've played an Ashton amp that didn't sound too bad. You could maybe try a Stagg too.

Les, You might check out the SX stuff. I started my youngest out on a short scale SX jazz bass. A very nice starter. Plays great and sounds pretty good and very inexpensive. I would highly recommend it. I played bass for about 15 years before coming back to guitar and the Jazz bass was my do it all favorite. You can make them pop or growl or even smooth them out admirably for some bluesy stuff.
