I know and agree that it's impossible to say or prove that one great guitarist is greater than another or that one style of music is better than another. But I think it interesting to narrow down in one's opinion what are the greatest to you.
Mine in no particular order:
Eric Johnson: Ah Via Musicom Al DiMeola: Elegant Gypsy The Dixie Dregs: Night of the Living Dregs Van Halen: Fair Warning Jeff Beck: Wired
Man, that was tougher than I thought. I even had to modify my Jeff Beck pick. I think I pulled something in my brain.

Good to see Al DiMeola and Eric Johnson - tho EJ is far better known in the US than he is outside.
Mine... hmmm.... you could make it 100 albums and I'd probably find this hard... heh It's actually more difficult who I'm leaving out than putting in.
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms Rory Gallagher - Etched in Blue Eric Clapton - From the Cradle Albert Collins, Robert Cray, Johnny Copeland - Showdown Joe Satriani - Joe Satriani

I'm going to have to give this some consideration.....back soon. hmm If I did that it would be even harder - as soon as one springs to mind another 5 or 6 pop up Very hard because we are looking at guitars and not the whole - so Quadraphenia my fave album won't make it in because it isn't the guitar that makes it stand out In no particular order and subject to change - to be honest only the first two would be in the list every time Rory Gallagher - Etched in Blue (or Sinner and Saint can't make me mind up!) Robert Cray - Bad Influence Ben Andrews - Gallows Pole Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II (or maybe I or III damn) and what might be a curve ball here a band not known really for the guitarist although in my opinion very underrated some good solid funky guitar on this The Doors - Morrison Hotel I think as Rayden44 says you would have difficulty picking 100 best. There is loads of stuff I have heard recently that would make it on a top 10 depending on the mood I am in Good thought provoking post RK - I will listen to every album on here if I haven't already

Ahh HJ I do like Bad Influence and it was on my list prior to editing heh. But like you say it depends what sort of mood you're in. Midnight Stroll isn't bad either I tell you what tho Joe Bonamassa's Black Rock has me head banging in the car - I haven't done that in a long time. Haven't had the CD long enough to see if it stays in rotation tho

I also a have a live bootleg of him playing SRV of all people Like Joe Bonamassa's early stuff - his later stuff not to sure about - not really listened to Black Rock yet

Man ya'll have some great picks. I'm surprised but in a good way to see two different Doors albums in the mix. I could listen to Phil's 5 day in and day out. Great albums. I love the acoustic tones on just about all the CSN&Y stuff. I see we have some serious blues boys here. It was really hard for me not to have an SRV pick in my 5. But by having only 5 I felt it would reveal our real influences on the king of all instruments. There are a couple of picks that I haven't had the pleasure of listening to so I'm going to have to fire up the itunes account and get busy. Thanks for posting gentlemen. Les - let's get busy, I'm betting there are some dead dudes we need to pay homage to.

Muddy Waters - After the Rain. I just love his riffs. The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers. They're best album ever (imho) and you can't fault the guitar sounds on it, from "you gotta move" to "Wild Horses" Buddy Holly - Buddy Holly, with Rave on, Peggy Sue and Everyday. Probably one of the most influential "guitar" albums ever. John Lee Hooker - The Healer. He was just awesome and this album also features Carlos Santana and Bonnie Rait. Both pretty good guitarists too. And Finally Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac, One of my favourite guitarists playing some of my favourite tunes. Who could ask for more. Naturally I reserve the right to alter my opinions at any time!!

Great picks Les. Very thoughtful. Mostly dead guys but I already knew that would happen.
Phil - I had a crush on Stevie Nicks forever.

In random order:
The Allman Brothers Band - Brothers and Sisters. Two of the main reasons: "Jessica" and "Jelly Jelly"!
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Texas Flood. What can I say? Stevie is THE MAN!
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping. Love me some Southern Rock!
Buddy Guy - Damn Right, I've got the Blues. Buddy plus some awesome guest guitarists!
Eric Clapton - From the Cradle. I had this on cassette many moons ago and I have no idea what happened to it. I need to find me another copy - I'm jonesin' here!

Les, I like the blues but I loved Stevie and that raspy melotic voice, that long hair, and then their amazing guitar player. Those were the day. When I was a lad proper was not in my vocabulary.
