Now then I have a Schecter PT which basically looks like the guitar that Pete Townshend used in the 80s. A black tele with white binding and a maple neck.
It is a really nice playing guitar but the pickups are awful to my ears. They are Duncan Designed Schecter pickups humbuckers with a coil tap. I find them too hot and harsh even when they are tapped - like a telecaster on steroids!
Now Kevina of this very forum has expressed an interest in it but I really don't think he will like it for the very same reasons I don't. Now with him being a fellow forumite I would be happy to sell it sale or return but I am 98% sure he won't like it on the basis that he likes the telecaster single coil sound and this guitar is as far away as possible from that sound. Also Mrs Jack doesn't want me to sell it because it's pretty and when she starts to learn guitar that is what she will play (yeah right)
I am in a quandary here because as much as I am happy to sell it to Kev I am certain it will be coming back!
So my thoughts are put some new pick-ups on it and see if I like it more and if I don't then so be it.
So any thoughts on pick ups for this guitar, either low output humbuckers that I can split or a maybe a p-rail type pick-up?
I don't want to spend a fortune on it but I need to do something
What other factors would influence the pick-ups -new pots? moving them away from the strings?

Well I finally got round to doing this and I put some Tonerider humbuckers in and what a nice sound they make Alnico II Classics Set - AC2 From the Tonerider site I would say that is a spot on description of these pick ups - and all for £50 Tonerider make really reasonable pick ups - although the pickups are made in China they are made in their own factory. I think the company is a UK company although they have international dealers Tonerider make the pick ups for the Squier Classic Vibe Series www.tonerider.com/index.html

Same boat on the Fastback PT I tried. Lovely guitar finish and feel, but I just couldn't get a pleasing sound out of it in any tapped, split, whatever position. The Humbuckers were murky like I hate, and using the coil tap just seemed to reduce the volume. It's a gat I really wanted to love, and I wish Schecter in general would make more single coil gats that aren't strat copies. I cannot believe it. You post this on the same day I go shopping online and get some Toneriders. W T F! They sound good online - maybe not quite up to higher priced standards, but for the price (I got a Tele set for just over $100 NZ - less than 1 pickup normally) they seem to have bang for buck value nailed. I see they do a P90 in a bucker shape but it sounds pretty similar to what you've got so I don't know if it'll give you any more go The only problem you've posed for me is MY TELE IS A CLASSIC VIBE SQUIER...... So I now need to go check I'm not buying the ones that were originally supplied with the Tele that I replaced......

Well donkey balls. quote from tdpri forum about the classic vibe thinline's stock pups:
Pretty much a 2% underwound Tonerider Vintage Plus set...if they'd gone 2% hotter instead they'd be perfect. Very nice clean tone pickups.
2% winding + all new wiring and pots had better = a happy Tele and a happy me
Something really bad is going to happen to my old SX Tele if I'm still frustrated....

lol Well I didn't find out about toneriders by accident you know. I had LesBlues stick a spy camera in your house when he was there The stock pups did need a bit more grunt so yeah the winds should help. I also read further down on tdpri that someone else had gone Stock pups -> Other pups -> Tonerider Vintage Plus -> Tonerider Hot Classic. The Hot Classic demo's I've heard start to get into that muddy low notes area again so these should work for me. I'm going to have a Tele body I don't use (the SX), 2 sets of electrics, maybe I'll order a chunky allparts Tele Neck... get my hobby tool back from our singer (using it to engrave some harmonicas).... make an evil Tele of dooooooom

Looks like Schecter have changed the pickups on the Fastback version of the PT. Neck has a 3x3 covered humbucker on the neck, and a funky looking schecter thing on the bridge. hmmmm....
