Hey Lee,
Strats are a bit more versatile with the extra pick up, but Teles are teles and are ace
If you want to buy new and if I were you I would save up a little more and look at a Classic Player Strat or a Classic Player Baja Tele
I have a Classic Player 50s Strat and it is lovely guitar. They are MIM but have USA pickups I believe
One for sale on the Music Radar Forum
Squier Classic Vibes are supposed to be good but I would get a CP Fender everyday of the week.
Also you have A number of strat type guitars Godin Freeway being one of them - well worth a look

no no no. You should be looking at an Epiphone Les Paul Custom. I just happen to know someone selling one in brand new condition at an exceptionally fair price. HJ doesn't call me Delboy for nothing. :-)

Les, there's a rumor floating around that you're selling the LP so you can get a Strat. Before you answer this you should know that it really doesn't matter how you reply, the story stands.....

You might also want to look at the Fender Roadhouse Strat or a Fender Lone Star Strat (same as the Roadhouse except it has a humbucker in the bridge position). I am working on a deal for a Roadhouse right now and, hopefully, I'll get it this week.
Personally, I think the Strat is the way to go as you can get Tele-type sounds from it and can also do the rock and blues thing. I don't think the Tele does those quite as well as a Strat so the Strat, in my opinion, is more versatile.

I agree that the Strat is extremely versatile but don't count out the Tele in this respect also. The Tele is also very adept at blues, rock, and country but can do an admirable jazz box imitation as well. I recently traded my last Strat on a Tele almost without regret. I do kind of miss it but for what I'm doing the Tele works out better for about 80 percent of the tunes. In the end, what feels and sounds right to your ears is the way to go.

Les, there's a rumor floating around that you're selling the LP so you can get a Strat. Before you answer this you should know that it really doesn't matter how you reply, the story stands..... Today I spoke with my local guitar Guru about whether or not I should consider a Strat. I was saying that when I first was looking at guitars I naturally compared strat style against Les Paul style and in my very humble opinion the strats sounded "girly" while the Les Pauls had a more workman like sound to them. We also talked about whether one should bother having a strat if one has a tele. And while the two beasts are different, to quote HJ one sounds like a duck while the other sounds like a chicken. They do both offer that light bright sound that is so different from a heavy bodied humbucker equipped Les Paul. My Guru friend plays a Suhr just out of interest. So I have made a final decision (for now) that I do not need to add a strat to my small but select collection of guitars. Particularly as I think I'm falling in love with semi hollow bodies. Both My Sheraton and my recently departed Hohner were very versatile guitars, going from light and airy to dark and brooding. I sense a serious case of GAS approaching. Don't think I have a snowballs chance in a very hot place of persuading Lady Ann to buy me a Gibson es 335 for my 50th but there is a good chance she might spring for a Tokai es 135. Which I have on good authority is better than any Gibson built since about 1958!! ;D

Les, take the tokai ES and run with it. I've played several of the Tokai instruments from back when and they were all excellent. And if you ever call a Strat a girly sounding guitar again I will take a photo of Stevie Ray Vaughn and beat you senseless with it.

Well guys, good to see I can generate responses from y'all ;D RK I have a Tokai Les Paul copy, Korean not Japanese unfortunately but still a really nice sounding guitar. I've been lusting after the es 135 for ages so the half century might be enough to swing it for me.
