He also had me playing through a tube amp he has set up there and it sounded soooooo much better than a SS amp that I now want one bad. Even a cheap tube amp to get me by for the moment would make me happy so I'm now searching around for one. Vox AC4TV either the combo or the separates, i've tried both. I have the separate head and cabinet and think it sounds excellent. The price is good, the combo is cheaper. They both look real cool too in a retro kinda way. It is a 4watt amp which doesn't sound like much but it is loud. The amp also has a built in attentuator which allows you to choose between 4 watts, 1 watt or 1/4 watt. This means that you can drive the amp hard enough to give a really nice vintage tone without annoying the neighbours too much. I rarely have it set above 1/4 watt and never have the volume above half way (usually only 1/4) and my good lady still says it hurts her ears, even when she is at the other end of the house. I'm assuming of course that she is referring to the volume and not my playing. I got mine at Christmas and have been raving about it ever since.

I don't have a Vox tube amp, but based on Vox's overall sound, you can't go wrong. I also recommend the Epi Valve Jr., Peavey Royal Eight, and of course, the one I have: the Fender Champ 600. These three tube amps are all under $200. I got my Fender Champ new for $135 during an on-line promo; and I saw a used Valve Jr. for $80 the other day on Craigslist! I have a picture of my Champ 600 in my 'new amp' thread that I just made if you want to see it.

I bought a new amp but it wasn't a tube amp.
I wanted a SS amp that I could leave at my old place so that I could play when there visiting my former roommate/drinking for the weekend. Yesterday I grabbed a Traynor DG15R and, thus far, I love the thing. I've managed (quite quickly actually) to find some tones that I really liked and I am sure that, as I find more time to play around with it, I will find even more of them. The overdrive channel is quite good and you don't get the saturation effect that I've noticed with some other SS amps. The clean channel is particularly pleasing and, for a SS amp, is really quite full, rich, and responsive. I am sure I will like the clean channel even better once I find the optimum settings for it. Overall, I think this was a very solid purchase.
I also checked out some tube amps while I was in the store and, surprisingly, I think I liked the two Traynors I tried better than the majority of the others. When I do buy a tube amp I think I will have to give some serious tryout time to the Traynors and the Fender Blues Jr. and Hot Rod Deluxe. They are all in the same price range so that won't play a huge role in my decision. But right now the Traynors seem to offer the tone I like best plus the most features for the price so I don't think I can go wrong. I should also be able to find them used for significantly less than they cost new so I will keep my eyes open. Plus, they are made just the other side of Toronto from where I live so buying a local product of such good quality is a definite bonus.
