hm... I really start to wonder what I'm missing out. Because... I very recently bought a multi effect floor unit, the smallest (Me-25) from Boss. And that's all I use. Right, no amp whatsoever. If I want to annoy neighbours/girlfriend, I hook it up to my stereo, otherwise I use headphones. Right now, for me, those advantages (plus: aux in for jamming along mp3s, usb for recording) outweigh any possible tradeoffs regarding the sound. Which I don't notice because I don't have any comparison. Except for my €70 solid state amp that I haven't touched for months... Make your own advice out of this

I am going to go against the normal wisdom. I use a PodX3 Live. It has everything on it as far as side effects including a wha wha pedal , tuner and many options for amps and cabs. It has outstanding sounds, not like the less expensive Pods. I plug it into a PA when playing live and into my powered monitor speakers when at home. It can also plug into any tradicional amp. They run about $400 to $500 dollars in the US. Saying this I am getting ready to buy a fender blues Jr soon for some home recording. But I will be able to run my Pod through it too. Small tube amps can be mic'd and put into a PA for live performance but they don't have the volume need to compeat against the drums.

Not trying to resurrect a dead thread or anything but I figured this would best be posted here as it is a continuation of our previous discussion.
For those who recommended that I buy a tube amp I was wondering what everyone thought of the Peavey Valve King Royal 8?
I have found one that I can get for $100-$125(Canadian) which is about half the price of a new one and was thinking of picking it up just to try it out. As a grad student I can't really justify anything more expensive at the moment so thought this might be an idea to see what models like this are like without costing myself too much money. If it turns out I don't like this style of amp I can always sell it without losing too much cash (or I can do the same when I upgrade to a better one later on).
My other alternative is to return my little Marshall MG15 to the store where I bought it and pay the difference between that and a new Orange CR20LDX which is a lot better than my Marshall and will do me for now until I am out of grad school and can more easily afford to throw money around on gear.

I've never tried one, but I've read good things about them.
