I've said before on here that I have my collection complete. I've also said that I can't see myself buying another brand new guitar...BUT, I might have the opportunity to buy either a used Fender or a used Gibson. Right now, I don't have the money, but I have a small art collection that I'm thinking of selling, and with that, I could buy either of the above. Question is which one? Right now, my most expensive guitar is my Epiphone Les Paul Custom, but I've always wondered what the fuss is about big brother Gibson and the other big player: Fender.
I'm looking at two Craigslist ads. One offers a 2001 Gibson Les Paul Studio and the other offers a Fender American Deluxe Ash Strat. They both are similar in price, with the Fender going for $125 more. The Fender is about 36 miles away from me and the Les Paul is about 100 miles away. I've seen pics of the Fender, but not the Les Paul. Give me your input guys! BTW I own a Strat copy also.

Well it does depend on what you want really
Me? I would go for the Fender every time because I prefer single coils.
You already have a decent Les Paul copy and Les Paul studios are the stripped "cheaper Les Paul"
They are nice guitars as well American Deluxe Ash Strats
At the end of the day everyone will have their favorite

Gasman, unfortunately your collection will never be over. I have 3 guitars which at the moment is enough but if I had the money I would be def be buying another Tele or maybe trying for a G&L.
Me personally, I would always go with Fender ahead of Gibson. My main reason for this is that you hear about Gibsons having tuning problems and I think they have lost site of what the guitar is for with their latest edition the robot guitar.
Fender keep it pure, block of wood, magnets and 6 strings. The way it should be.

That's a tough one. The only way I see out is to audition 'em both. Kevina is correct, too. A person can never have to many guitars.

Thanks for your opinion guys! After reading my initial post back to myself, I had already gotten a good idea on which way to go, but I'll leave that 'till later (want to see what everone says)! I first have to sell my art collection to get the money, and by then, both guitars might be sold (but others will be available)!

If you dont mind me asking, what sort of money are you thinking you will get for the art work?

If you dont mind me asking, what sort of money are you thinking you will get for the art work? I have 12 pieces of pen and pencil drawings. All but three are framed. I think I could get anywhere from $650-$750 for the entire collection. There are plenty of galleries in the same city as where the Strat is being offered, so I was thinking maybe I could sell my collection there. Before anyone asks...No, I am not the artist! I acquired these almost 10 years ago and they are by various artists.

Nice one mate, you must be pretty good. Good luck. I wish I were a good artist! These pieces of art were created by various artists. Anyway, as I said before, I had a good idea on which way to go on the guitar decision after I re-read my initial post. I have to agree with Kevina and Happy Jack: If things work out, and the Strat is still available, I am going to go for the Strat! I have a great Epiphone Les Paul already and I'd hate to drive 200 miles round trip with the possibility of not liking the Gibson Studio after all - a long trip wasted! On the other hand, I have my Strat copy (which I love), but the American Deluxe is just so awesome! It has the S-1 switching system which can give you a sort of humbucker sound in almost all of the positions. Besides, as manufacturers go, I like Fender a lot more than Gibson! While researching the Strat, I came upon this video. Thanks for you input guys, enjoy!:

***UPDATE***
I guess both guitars I was looking at have been sold. They are no longer on Craigslist. It's just as well, I didn't have the money yet, and I was starting to feel guilty about spending that much money on a guitar. I don't know about the rest of you, but with the $700 - $800 dollars that I was going to spend on the guitar, I could provide for my son and myself for one month! I think I'll wait until I get some major money in (like when I sell my house, hopefully this summer), before I even start thinking of buying an expensive U.S.A. - made guitar. Besides, lately, I haven't even been playing! I took out my Epi Les Paul about a week ago and I've only played it once.

It's always a pain when you see a potential deal and don't have the cash to pursue it but at the same time it's fun to browse. I wouldn't give up on Gibson particularly if you are buying 2nd hand. Hgowever I would definitely want to try before I buy, whether you go for Fender or Gibson. Anyway that's my tuppence worth. :-)

I played my Epi Les Paul last night, and I had forgotten what a sweet guitar that was! So, if I come across a Gibson for a good price, I might just give it a go! I do like the idea of owning an American Fender to go along with my little Fender Champ 600 though!

I Fender Strat will sound ace through a Champ G-Man ;D It is hard when GAS takes you I am fortunate as in I have no kids or expensive hobbies except for GAS I also have a hobby that if I want to I can use to earn a little money for GAS and Mrs Jack happily accepts that any money I earn I can spend on what I want. She also made the BIG mistake of calling the bank account my private earnings go into my GUITAR ACCOUNT ;D ;D Well she said it That said I bung her some money every now and then for herself to spend You will have to get a part time job G-Man or just put a little away each month and that is your GAS fund and you won't feel guilty about it then. Talking to a mate who is a keen golfer - our hobby isn't that expensive! Lesblues cuts logs and sews up mailbags to fund his gas but he needs to work harder cos he only has three guitars ;D

I'm just a poor boy from a poor family...... Yeah - you are poor like I am thin and a tee totaller You are in the "Scottish Richest Landowner List" I read - you are just careful with the money you take off the poor people of Fife with your taxes and rents. You might kid this lot Dude but you can't kid a kidder (as we say in sunny Manchester)
