I've been watching a bunch of concerts lately, and have been regularly blown away by the "sidemen" and other band members, so as excited about guitars as I am, I figured I'd mention some names that really blew me away.
w/ John Mayer:
Steve Jordan. Holy cow, that man is a never ending groove machine.
Charlie Hunter. OK, I am stretching it with this one, he's clearly a headliner in his own right, but in that video - the making of a tune in the studio - he wasn't there under his own shingle as it were. And man, can that man play. I am a huge fan of his.
Pino Paladino. Need I say more? I mean, Pino's the man.
Robbie McIntosh. If you don't know this guy, you actually know him From playing w/ Knopfler to being an ace studio guy, you've heard him millions of times. And the guy delivers every time.
w/ Norah Jones:
The afore-mentioned Robbie McIntosh, as flawless as ever.
Adam Levy. Good Lord, that guy always plays at the right moment, and seemingly the right note(s), too. Another incredible vibe guitarist.
(To say nothing of the fact that Dolly Parton, Richard Julian and Gilian Welch also participate, for Pete's sake.)
w/ John Prine (Austin City Limits)
Pat McLaughlin - man that guy can feel the music he plays. Just watch him move his body in all directions!
Jason Wilbur - another fine exponent of not playing 3500 notes a minute, but hitting the note that will complement the song without taking it over. Tasty as they come.
Roseanne Cash (Crossroads w/ Steve Earle)
John Leventhal - some of the best tones I have ever heard coming out of a Tele. Perfect technique. Also happens to be her husband
Mark Knopfler
Richard Bennett - another incredible guitar player who needs no one else on the bill to promise an incredible night, but add him to Knopfler and it's instant fun and beautiful music.
Paul Franklin - maybe there's a better pedal steel player out there. I just don't know who that would be.
Many more, but off the top of my head, this is it. Talk about some great music out there. We're blessed.
