To preface, I am a huge Steve Earle fan. He is to me a songwriter in the class of Guy Clark, John Prine and TVZ to name but a few.
Anyway, some SE quotes I thought were interesting:
"I'd been turned down by every record label in town. I was widely considered to be a pain in the ass, and people were wondering when I was going to go back to where I come from."
"I finally tested positive for ProTools."
"the concept of owning a song never ceases to amaze me."
"Townes van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that.”
“You see things differently at 40 than you do at 31. Especially if you got to 40 the way I did.”
“I make an embarrassing amount of money for a borderline Marxist, just by selling 100,000 records. I don't sell millions of records, and I don't need to.”
“I'm not trying to get myself deported or something. In a big way this is the most pro-American record I've ever made.”
"I don't really think in terms of obstacles. My biggest obstacle is always myself. If I can get Me out of the way, I can do anything."
"Even Hank Williams couldn't get on country radio right now...."
"It's sometimes fun to be the most radical mother----- in first class...."
"Politics and music don't necessarily go hand in hand. They just do for me..."
"You know what? If I could, I'd just go off and write nothing but poetry because I'm so in love with it."
