Interesting, to me anyway, that so far no-one has voted for Fuzz! No Keith Richards fans out there?

I voted reverb. I don't use effects that much. I have one distortion pedal and a multi-effects guitar processor. That's all I need for now. Sounds like you use effects more than you think

Sounds like you use effects more than you think So far, I've only used the multi-effects unit just as a novelty - don't really use it for playing on a regular basis. I've had it for over a year and a half. Maybe I'll should start using it more seriously.

I don't think you should feel you have to use effects if you are happy with the sound you can achieve without them. Has to be said though that they can be a lot of fun. I like to use my Blues driver in particular to add a bit of bluesy sounds at low volumes instead of cranking the amp to achieve the same effect. Either way it should just depend on what sounds right to you. I know that some people use effects to emulate their favourite guitarist but I like to use them to get a sound that I like. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Les! I'm pretty happy playing with little or no effects right now, but that might change after yesterday. Yesterday, a friend who had played in a band many years ago came to visit. He brought his "Tele" with him to show it to me. It has a Tele neck, Tele pickups, and Tele controls, but the body looks sort of like a Strat...very cool. Looks custom made. Anyway, he is a very good musician. He started playing without effect, then I brought out my multi-effect unit and WOW...the tones he was producing with my presets were amazing! Then he started playing my guitars, and WOW again! I didn't know my guitars could sound like that! I guess I'm not experienced enough to use all of those effects to sound good. Right now, I'm just happy enough to get a chord progression sounding right or to get all of the notes right on a solo (not to mention good bends and flick-offs).

I have a friend who has been playing a lot longer than me and whenever he picks up one of my guitars to play it sounds so much better than when I play it. You could swear it was a different guitar and that is without using effects! It would be nice to be able to play as well as him someday. The funny thing is he doesn't rate himself as a guitarist and is always comparing himself against better musicians. I suppose that's how we should all be.

I own own and older model Digitech rp300a digital modeling pedal, but to be honest I am so busy just learning to play that I don't even bother to use it. I will worry about getting the right effect sound after I have figured out the basics a bit more.

I think a lot of non-professional guitarists are a bit modest about their playing and think that they are not as good as the next guy. To me, as long as I am learning something new and having fun at it, I don't compare myself to others, because there will always be someone better than me, regardless of how good I get. Besides, I don't consider myself a 'guitarist'. I'm just a guy that plays his guitars whenever he gets a little time to himself.

Some songs do need a bit of dirt to sound right. Though I don't tend to class overdrive as an effect myself. Sometimes with multi-effects you become like a kid in a sweet shop and spend more time messing with effects then actually playing guitar

Good attitude, sometimes, though a little competitiveness helps to spur us on.
