It really is hit or miss. I know a pro who swears by Taylors (usually when I mention Martins.) I was at the guitar store a few months back. Tried out several Taylors. Very inconsistent--regardless of price.
Then I picked up a dinged-up Takamine. Fantastic tone. Felt great. Bought it for $200.

Taks are definitely a great choice. Tough as nails and sound good amplified which is not always the case even with more expensive models. I have a Taylor 710ce that sounds great acoustically but leaves me a little flat amplified. We bought my oldest son an Ovation for his high school graduation a few years back. It sounds pretty fair acoustically but really shines when plugged in. I would probably get one, but it's round back and my round front doesn't get along. Everytime I strap it on it ends up face up like a dobro.
