GAS having well and truly taken hold of me big time as we say in Manchester I decided my next purchase would probably be a USA strat or tele, however after trying them both I came to the conclusion that although they were a little bit better then the Classic Player Strat and Tele I already have they weren’t worth double the price. I thought about a Gibson SG or a Les Paul but not really my style.
I looked at a Fender CS 60 NOS strat which I could afford but it had a rosewood fingerboard which for me is wrong on a sunburst strat!
I then thought about a custom guitar and looked at few local luthiers but nothing really caught my fancy until I came across Rees Guitars in Cambridge and after having a chat with Clive Rees the owner of the company I came up with a spec for my customs as follows:
Rees R2 Korina body
Warmouth compound radius birds eye maple neck
Maple scratch plate (no tone sapping plastic on my guitars said Clive - even the access plates to the electrics have to be wood!)
Sperzel locking tuners
Gotoh wrap around bridge
Dark cherry red nitro cellulose finish
Pick ups are
SD P rail in the bridge
SD quarter pounder sc in the middle
SD jazz hb in the neck
Controls are
Volume push/pull bridge single coil P90 / humbucker
Tone push / pull neck single coil / humbucker
Rotary 3 way which switches between 5 way Parallel stratolike switching, 3 series way humbucker, and a Peter Green / Jimmy page out of phase setting.
We decided not to use the single coil on the P rail as it was perceived to be weak.
When Clive tried the pick up configuration he decided it was so good he would offer it as a standard “do it all power axe”!
Anyway price for all this and a hardcase just over £1000
It should be here just before Christmas. I will post some pictures of the build when I get home
